5 things you can do as a Student by Jerahmeel Chen
1. Invest in yourself – many of the students today don’t care about their education and just have fun. Though, we need to balance our life with fun but we can’t escape the fact that we need to study as well. Many don’t see the wisdom behind it but it is the key to your future and the future of our country
2. Save a portion of your allowance – as a student, it’s seldom for us to think about saving our pocket money for a rainy day. We all think we have our parents to finance us once we ran out. Take the life of John Gokongwei. His family was rich when they came to the Philippines way back 1900’s. Due to some family incident, he had to stop school and had to work in Carbon and Colon. He learned his lesson well and got rich through hard work and dedication
3. Fail Forward – the feeling of failure devastates a student. It gives a feeling of hopelessness and pain which we try to hide from others. What’s worst is that we get teased over by our friends and some of our family members because we fail. This may be a fact but you still have that choice to learn from it or to cry over spilled milk. Failing forward is accepting that you made a mistake and learn it by heart. Don’t hold grudges, don’t blame yourself just accept that it was a mistake. After that, you move on.
4. Build bridges – most Filipinos either back bite or act on something that is hurtful to another. As a student, you have every opportunity to make as many friends as possible. You do not only build yourself a wide network but you also build integrity and a name for yourself. These people will be the one who will help you build up your future.
5. Don’t stop being a child – this might be ironic by itself but what I mean is that being creative, imaginative, hungry for knowledge, and idealistic are all traits of a child. These traits are the things that will make you grow in your career. It will help you climb the corporate ladder or be successful in what you are passionate about. They say that the difference between a child and an adult is the adult stops having fun!
You may think that you can’t do as much as a student but Warren Buffet once said that “I regret that I started investing in the stock market at the age of 11.” He was one of the top ten richest men alive. He donated half of his wealth to charity.
Everything has to start somewhere. The problem is on realizing when we should start acting on our ideas. Think big, think positive! They might make you the next Bill Gates or the next Einstein.
