Dear SHS-J Community,
Pax Christi!
During the just concluded Sesquicentennial (150th Anniversary) Celebration of Jesuit Education in the Philippines (1859-2009), Fr. General Adolfo Nicolas, S.J. challenged us to listen to the Holy Spirit as we deal with two major Frontiers that Jesuit education must face today: the Frontier of Depth and the Frontier of Universality. Both frontiers are rooted in the Ignatian ideal of MAGIS - to do more and be more.
The Frontier of Depth is the application of the Jesuit Principle of "non multa sed multum - not many but much" or better paraphrased as "not quantity but depth". With the overflow of knowledge and information, we are challenged to lead our community into a deeper understanding and appreciation of what is most important. Beyond the updated curriculum and sophisticated facilities, we reflect on how we as Jesuit educators and formators respond to the youth's deepest hunger for meaning and purpose, for strength and hope that the Kingdom of God is experienced in their lives.
The Frontier of Universality reiterates the commitment of Jesuit education to train students to become persons for others. We must celebrate our distinct, unique identity as a Catholic, Jesuit, Chinese-Filipino school, but we must educate our students to be global citizens who have great concern and compassion especially toward those who have less in life.
Facing the Frontiers of Depth and Universality in SHS-J is a big challenge, but with God's grace and our passionate commitment, the goal is not as daunting.
Be assured of my prayers.
In Domino,
Fr. Manuel A. Uy, S.J.
President
